2020 MLK Celebration Information

Thursday, January 16, 2020 – Power in Pumps, 7:00pm

Location:  Biloxi Visitors Center

Admission:  $20 

Focus:  An event to bring together women of color to discuss relevant mental issues. Throughout history women of color have been on the forefront of social change while protecting and raising families. Women of color are disproportionately affected by socioeconomic issues such as discrimination and poverty while trying to obtain stability for their families. Power in Pumps, a mental health awareness soiree, will bring women together to discuss issues and discover solutions.


Saturday, January 18, 2020 – The Village

Location:  Moss Point High School (activities will take place in the auditorium, cafeteria commons area and library)

Admission:  Free and open to the public

8:30am: Health fair begins: Participants offer health education in areas such as HIV, hypertension and more.

9:00am – Concurrent sessions:

  • Youth Summit: Panelists address topics that are relevant to today’s youth.
  • State of the Black Family:
    • Moderator – Jonathan Green, STEPS Coalition
      • Panelists: Dr Corey Wiggins, Executive Director State NAACP-focus health,
      • Education and civic engagement Cassandra Welchin, MS Black Women’s Roundtable- focus women in MS,
      • Fair labor practices Heather Sanders-Bancorp South, wealth building in the black community

Noon – Concurrent sessions:

  • When Women Talk: Community leaders facilitate open and honest conversation with young girls offering advice and guidance on how to navigate through social, mental, physical challenges they are facing in their lives. In addition, participants offer questions to be answered by panelists.
  • Man 3 Man Summit: Panelist DeKeither Stamps, city councilman, city of Jackson Dr. Anthony Witherspoon, Mayor of Magnolia MS

Sunday, January 19, 2020, 4:00pm

Location:  Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 1028 Denny Avenue, Pascagoula, MS 

Admission:  Free

Gospel Concert and Keynote Speaker Mike Espy. Mr. Espy focuses on his experience as the first African American U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.


Monday, January 20, 2020, Parade & Battle of the Bands

Location: Parade route Coast Coliseum parking lot. Battle of the Bands inside the Coast Coliseum.

Admission:  $5.00

11:00am – Parade begins

Noon – Battle of the Band begins

Headliners – Alcorn State and MS Valley State
