The 3rd Annual Gulf Coast Oyster Cook-Off & Festival takes place Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29. One of the things local restaurants enjoy is participating in the oyster cook-off competition. This year’s competition will be Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Festival attendees can sample oysters from some of the best restaurants on the coast. The three categories in the cook-off are charbroiled, raw and the house specialty. WLOX Gulf Coast Weekend talked with Chef Shayne Varone of Wentzel’s Seafood Restaurant to see what new techniques he has up his sleeve for this year’s competition. Last year Shayne placed first in a category that won’t be included in this year’s cook-off, the Rockefeller.
Restaurants participating in this year’s cook-off are Wentzel’s Seafood Restaurant, Felix’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar, White Pillars, Beach Blvd. Steamer, The Reef, Bacchus Biloxi Beach, 200 North Beach, C & C Italian Bistro and Bacchus Beach in Pass Christian.
