GULF COAST, Miss. (WLOX) - The moon’s shadow will move across the United States on Monday, April 8, and South Mississippi is getting ready. Here’s a list of local events are taking place ahead of the upcoming solar eclipse.

Wednesday, April 3

  • Two Harrison County libraries will hold a story time about the solar eclipse: Orange Grove Library @ 10:30 a.m. and Margaret Sherry Library 10 a.m. These two libraries, as well as the Pass Christian Public Library, will have solar glasses. Limit one pair per adult or 2 per family.

Thursday, April 4

  • The Stone County Library will have a craft and story time about the solar eclipse at 3:30 p.m. The library will also have solar glasses. 242 Second Street South, Wiggins.

Friday, April 5

  • Edgewater Mall will be handing out a total of 3,000 free eclipse glasses from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Limit is one pair per person. The glasses will be available at MiniSo, Gulf Coast Artists Unlimited, My Kind Of Place, Gulf Coast Cards & Sports Memorabilia and Popcorn Plus.

Monday, April 8

  • INFINITY Science Center will offer a day filled with science fun. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • At 1 p.m., Gautier Public Library will explore the history, meaning, and science behind the phenomenon. Solar glasses will be provided. All ages are invited to attend and there will be light refreshments.
  • The Center for STEM Education at the University of Southern Mississippi will hold viewing parties on the Hattiesburg campus and Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. At the Gulf Park campus, viewing begins at 12:31 p.m. ends at 3:10 p.m. in the Lofty Lot. Maximum coverage of 84 percent (a partial eclipse) will occur at 1:51 p.m.
  • Sonic is giving away eclipse glasses with the purchase of a special “Blackout Slush Float,” while supplies last.
