JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) - Two major cities in Jackson County celebrated the Christmas season with old traditions and some new ones.

In Moss Point, Christmas in the River City took place next to City Hall, where residents lined up their booths to sell merchandise, such as baked goods.

Moss Point’s class of 1983 decided to take on the fun with their Christmas Candy Land instead of a Winter Wonderland.

“That’s what we’re trying to do with this outreach. It’s to give back because we’ve received so much,” Carla Renee Booker said.

To them, events like these are a chance to show community support as well as the support Moss Point has to offer.

“We’re just working on continuing to strengthen our community, show people that Moss Point has so much to offer, so much to see. They’re good kids here and good people here in Moss Point,” Booker said.

“We just want to show people that we can get together without causing any drama,” Byron Booker said.

The main attraction took place along Main Street where the parade took place.

Kids lined up all along Main Street to collect candy from Mayor Billy Knight, city officials, and other organizations that surround Jackson County to show their love for the city.

Over in Gautier, Mayor Casey Vaughan celebrated with the community during their own Christmas festivities.

“In Gautier, we are blessed to have many talented youths from our football players, our band, and to our singers, soccer and baseball,” Mayor Vaughan said.

The grounds of the old Singing River property were filled with Christmas lights, a Christmas tree, and festive people who were ready to take pictures with Santa, as well as get a chance to enjoy some rides.

Just like any other festival here in South Mississippi, vendors are always happy to see support coming from the community, even saying events like this help to strengthen a community like Gautier.

“It’s always good to be local and everybody to see what’s going on in their community and also helps to support the smaller businesses that are trying to get up and thrive,” Linda Durbin said.
