BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi will celebrate the creative legacy of George E. Ohr, known as the ‘Mad Potter of Biloxi,’ on Saturday, July 12.
The museum houses the work of Ohr, who was known for his eccentric ceramic pieces and eccentric personality.

Ohr, born in Biloxi on July 12, 1857, crafted paper-thin pottery with vibrant glazes. To celebrate his 168th birthday, the museum is holding its annual George E. Ohr Birthday Bash.
“We’re very excited to be celebrating that birthday. It’s a big one,” said Robert Harrison, Operations Manager at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art.
The free event gives people the opportunity to get an up-close look at Ohr’s work, which dates back more than a century.

“He’s considered the greatest art potter of all time,” said Harrison. “The work is extremely thin and delicate, and people are always amazed by the beauty of the glazes and the artwork in and of itself, just the shapes, the forms, and the style.”

Along with the display of Ohr’s internationally acclaimed work, the birthday celebration will include hands-on clay crafts, activities for all ages, live music, food, and birthday cake.
“We will also have some vendors on site providing arts and crafts options for purchase,” said Harrison.
The George E. Ohr Birthday Bash will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 12. The museum is located at 386 Beach Boulevard in Biloxi.
