New Orleans airport to add second terminal by 2031

Armstrong International plans major expansion with second terminal

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport will soon have a second terminal, officials announced Tuesday.

The airport plans to add 15 new gates and expand its overall capacity by 2031. The project also includes improvements to the surrounding roadway system, baggage claim area, and security areas, as well as the addition of 3,000 parking spaces. With these expansions, the airport will have a total of 50 gates.

Kelly Schulz with New Orleans & Company said she’s enthusiastic about the growth.

“We create the demand for those visitors to come, and they’re going to need those additional flights and things with such growth,” Schulz said.

Looking ahead, officials aim to expand the airport even further over the next 20 years. Plans include a total of 60 gates, five or more concourses, and three garages.

Kevin Dolliole, the airport’s director of aviation, said most of the funding will come from the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Not touching the city’s budget at all,” he said. “No local taxpayer dollars involved in the airport operation at all.”

Schulz added that increasing destinations will allow New Orleans to expand its global reach through international marketing.

“Every day, we work with the airport, we work with the airlines,” she said. “We have partnerships with them to make sure that we’re promoting New Orleans as much as possible and growing that service.”

Dolliole said the airport’s master plan will be finalized in the coming months. Once complete, the airport will seek final approval from the FAA.

He also noted that the planned passenger train between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is expected to include a stop at the airport.
