GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - As Cruisin’ the Coast wraps up, the spotlight turns to the people who keep this massive event running.
From directing traffic, to stamping cards and helping with registration, it takes an army of dedicated people to keep things cruising smoothly.
Nearly 750 volunteers in bright yellow shirts give their time and energy to make the weeklong event a success.
Some work all week, while others step in for a day or two, but every single one of them shares a love for people and for the spirit of Cruisin’.
Kelli Decoronado, one of the volunteers, says the people are what keep her coming back.

“Volunteering is so important. Giving back to your community in any way you can,” Decoronado said. “The car clubs are amazing at helping out. Without volunteers, this would never happen. The people are what brought me back. I love seeing folks from all over the country and meeting other volunteers and local car club members. It’s just a family, and everybody is so nice and friendly. I haven’t had a bad experience at all.”
Roy Clark, another volunteer, agrees.
“I love these cars, but more important, I love people,” Clark said. “I’m telling you, I love them.”
The finale ceremony at Jones Park honored those volunteers, including this year’s Gene Oswalt Volunteer of the Year, Bob Hand.
Hand says he’s humbled by the recognition.

“I’m honored and surprised I got it,” he said. “I’ve been involved since ’97, the first year I missed, but I’ve been at it every year since. It’s a job, but with a lot of help, we get through it.”
Cruisin’ the Coast wouldn’t be possible without the hands and hearts behind the scenes from the Cruisin’ Krewe. Organizers say they’re always looking for new members.
