MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Leaders at Bellingrath Gardens and Home unveiled their Centennial Master Plan on Tuesday afternoon— a long-term vision that will guide how the historic gardens grow and evolve over the next century.
The plan focuses on preserving and enhancing the spaces visitors already love, while also creating new experiences to attract future generations.
There were three major takeaways from today’s announcement:
- Restoring the Historic Core: Design work begins tomorrow to revitalize the heart of the gardens — the area surrounding the Bellingrath Home.
- Creating a New Children’s and Family Adventure Garden: A space designed to spark curiosity, exploration, and learning for the youngest visitors.
- Rebuilding the Camellia Arboretum: The arboretum, heavily damaged by Hurricane Frederic in 1979, will finally make its return.
In short, the Centennial Master Plan blends restoration of beloved spaces with reimagined new ones to carry Bellingrath’s legacy forward.
Executive Director Todd Lasseigne says the project is about more than just beautification — it’s about preserving a Gulf Coast treasure for generations to come.
