JACKSON, Miss. (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is encouraging families to start the new year on a healthy and fun note by attending First Day Hikes on January 1, 2026 at one of two South Mississippi State Parks.
Buccaneer State Park and Paul B. Johnson State Park will offer guided hikes, refreshments, and activities for participants of all ages.

According to MDWFP, First Day Hikes is a nationwide program spearheaded by America’s State Parks to promote outdoor activity. The initiative coordinates hundreds of free, guided hikes across all 50 states every New Year’s Day, providing a perfect opportunity to experience the natural beauty of state parks.
MDWFP is encouraging all participants to share their adventures by tagging us on social media or using #FirstDayHikes and #YourStateParks.
You can find a full list of participating state parks on the MDWFP webpage.
