STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) - Community members came together Saturday to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as the annual Stone County MLK Parade rolled through downtown Wiggins.

Dancers waved pom poms, and band members from Stone High School honored the civil rights icon through their performance. Dozens lined the streets for the celebration.

“He brought people together, and the thing is, it matters,” Wiggins resident Lisa Moody said.

Tyra Simmons was among those lined up on the street for the celebration. She said Dr. King is a hero and deserves the recognition.

“I just feel like he has had a big impact on us,” Simmons said. “It feels good to know that somebody stood up for us and, you know, fought for our rights. It means a lot.”

As people in the parade traveled down Third Street, candy flew through the air and signs were hung paying tribute to Dr. King.

Kaliahya Collins participated in the parade with the Center Stage School of Dance.

“It’s special to me because we have so many freedoms that he fought for that today we are able to just live free,” Collins said.

Xander Arrington said Dr. King’s legacy of bringing people together remains important.

“He spent so much time bringing us together, we have to thank him because if it wasn’t for him, we would still be – we really don’t know what it would be,” Arrington said.
