BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - The 10th Annual Barkloxi PAWrade will take place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Point Cadet Plaza in Biloxi, raising funds for the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

“Last year we had 115 dogs in the parade, so we’re still getting a good amount of people registering their pets,” said Katie King, Senior Director of Philanthropy for the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

Those in the parade often throw beads, moon pies, and candy.

“People really get into it. It’s a blast,” said Jean McGrury with the Biloxi Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

The parade includes costume contests for the most festive and best-decorated wagons. Organizers will also crown a Barkloxi King and Queen.

“It’s whoever raised the most donations for the shelter,” King said about how the royal winners are chosen.

The event will feature a DJ, food trucks, hot chocolate and coffee sales. Organizers will also set up shade drapes for the pavilion to block wind and keep attendees comfortable in cold weather.

The Biloxi Bay Area Chamber of Commerce partners with the Humane Society to host the family-friendly event, which began 10 years ago as a community service project.

Spectators can attend for free. Pet owners can register their animals the day of the event for $20. All proceeds benefit the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

“We’re housing around 270 animals. Last year, we provided services to over 16,000 community pets. So the need is huge,” King said.
