LONG BEACH/WAVELAND, Miss. (WLOX) - Barriers are going up along parade routes this Mardi Gras weekend as officials work to prevent safety issues that occurred last year.
Workers hammered rebar into the ground along the Long Beach parade route this week after spectators parked too close to active train tracks during last year’s festivities. CSX Transportation is implementing precautionary measures to avoid similar problems.

“We want to keep safety at the forefront here so everyone has a good time,” said Long Beach Police Department Capt. Patrick Craig. “You’ll notice that there’s a fence along the railroad tracks. CSX put that out as a precaution.”
The Long Beach parade rolls Saturday at 6 p.m.

In Waveland, the Nereids Parade kicks off at noon on Sunday.
Waveland has implemented new rules for spectators. Pets are not allowed at the parade. Glass bottles and silly string are prohibited. Spectators cannot rope off spots with chairs or tape.
Police say the new rules are designed to ensure everyone celebrates safely and goes home with their beads and memories.
