OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) - A community project in Ocean Springs that will see hundreds of trees planted in the city kicked off on Saturday.

After months of planning, the first of 500 trees were planted.

The Ocean Springs Tree Canopy Renewal Project, under the umbrella of the Historic Ocean Springs Association, is partnering with Hancock Whitney Bank on this initiative.

Officials hope to plant 500 live oak trees, which are native to the area, in Ocean Springs public parks by next year.

“Those are the trees that have lived in this area for a long, long time, and they are really accustomed to our soil conditions and rain and heat,” said Julia Weaver, Ocean Springs Tree Canopy Renewal Project coordinator. “And they provide a lot of benefits to people, to nature, to water quality, and to birds, insects and mammals.”
