OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) - Carnival season is sweeping the coast, and Ocean Springs has been parading for nearly two decades. The community’s 18-year-old night parade tradition continues to light up the streets and draw crowds.
The annual celebration brings together locals and out-of-town visitors for the festivities.
“Mardi Gras is community. It’s a day for community,” said Fred Green, a local resident.
Bronsky Bryant, a member of the Vacation Krewe, travels to Ocean Springs specifically for the parade each year.
“We come to the Ocean Springs parade every single year. We’re in the Vacation Crew, the float. We just love this atmosphere and what it brings to Mardi Gras. We just absolutely love it,” Bryant said.

Founder still involved after nearly two decades
Though parade organizers have largely come and gone, Billy Nix, who started the tradition, remains involved as president of the Ocean Springs Civic Association.
“Ocean Springs was a quiet little town. I was born and raised here. I wanted to give back to Ocean Springs for what it gave me,” Nix said.
While Ocean Springs may still be considered a quiet town by some, Mardi Gras transforms the community atmosphere.
Tammy Green, an Ocean Springs resident, said the celebration provides a positive experience during difficult times.
“In the sad time that we live in today, look around at all the happy faces and all the fun that everybody is having. That’s the best part of Mardi Gras,” Green said.

Bryant emphasized the community aspect of the celebration.
“The best part of Mardi Gras is being around people and just having fun. That’s what Mardi Gras is all about — let the good times roll,” Bryant said.
