D’IBERVILLE, Miss. (WLOX) - The Scarlet Pearl held its annual lion dance in the hotel lobby on Saturday to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year.

Lion dances are a 1,500-year-old tradition in Chinese culture that usher in fortune and good luck for the new year.
“Back in the day when there was bad energy, they would don a lion costume, beat the drums really loud to kind of scare away the negative energy,” said Jimmy Pham, a lion dancer. “Nowadays, we perform lion dancing to bring good luck and prosperity to those around us.”

The Year of the Horse begins on February 17 in the Lunar calendar.
