Bay St. Louis celebrates Mardi Gras with Krewe of Real People parade (wlox)

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (WLOX) - The city traded its workday routine for beads, music and Mardi Gras spirit Tuesday as the Krewe of Real People the Next Generation held its annual Fat Tuesday parade.

The parade started on Bookter Street, where Paul Farve Sr. served as king this year. Farve said the honor felt special because he grew up a street over from the parade route.

“I literally grew up a street over,” Farve said. “The Krewe of Real People passed in front of my house every Mardi Gras. I really thought that was all Mardi Gras was until I got a little older.”

Farve said he remembered watching the parade as a child and that being king this year feels like a dream come true. He purchased throws for parade-goers, including king crowns and other items.

Creole Pierce loaded her float with crowd favorites, including toys, plastics and light-up items. She said her favorite throws are pops and “big daddies.”

Jasmine Ray painted her family’s float by herself, calling it handcrafted and original. Ray said the parade means everything to her family, and the timing made it extra special since her birthday is on Wednesday.

“Just having a good time, my birthday is tomorrow, so it’s gonna be even more fun and being with my kids,” Ray said.

The Krewe of Real People the Next Generation picked up where an older krewe left off in 2017. Organizer Deven Daniels said the group’s purpose is to celebrate the community and culture of Bay St. Louis.

“We love to give to all the people that come, and what’s different is that it’s a family event,” Daniels said. “We are all about family here at the Krewe of Real People the Next Generation.”
