BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — Through portraits, storytelling and a commitment to service, Biloxi artist Alexius Evers is uplifting lives around her.
“Pictures and cameras can’t capture what our eyes can,” said Evers. “I would like to be able to take what I can put on a piece of paper and show the world just that—what I can see."
Evers is capturing the world around her with one piece of art at a time. She recognizes how her talent can make a big difference.

“A lot of us have goals and desires. We sit back and hold onto it, but then we do nothing and complain about it.”
Evers is a portrait artist, but her real canvas is the next generation. While raising three children, she’s been working in schools and community outreach programs, using art to help young people see themselves more clearly.

“I work with them to strengthen their minds when it comes down to who they are and using art to do that.”
Her influence is about more than teaching art. It’s also about helping build self-esteem.
“When you get in middle school, you’re having to battle two worlds: who you were, who you’re becoming, who they want you to be, and you’re having to think about yourself at the same time.”

Her inspiration for helping others has grown since moving to the Coast about 25 years ago.
“Being able to say that Mississippi has impacted my life is a good thing, and I want other kids to know that too.”

Now, as a member of the Mississippi Arts Commission’s roster of artists, Evers is planning what’s next.

“In 2027, for Black History Month, I would like to be able to do a Mississippi roots program, allowing students and teachers to learn about Mississippi culture, but on a span of we’re not just stuck here. We can still do a lot of great things being from Mississippi and being Mississippians.”
Leading up to Easter this week, Evers is focused on enhancing her church’s Resurrection Sunday program. For the third year in a row, she’s turning basic materials into a set she hopes will bring the story alive.
“I owe everything that I have, this house and my children, to God. So, I have no other choice but to give back.”

Through acts of generosity and artistic creativity, Evers is doing her part to make a positive impact on everyone she meets.
“If everybody else who has interacted with me can say, ‘She has made me smile once,’ or, ‘She has given me good advice one time,’ then that’s all I need.”
