GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) — The Naval Construction Battalion Center will open its gates to the public on Saturday, April 18, for Seabee Day, offering families a chance to see military equipment and learn about the work of Navy Seabees.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Seabee Base in Gulfport.

Commanding officer Capt. Ana Franco said the event will feature static displays with Seabee equipment.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to just be able to crawl around some of that equipment and just envision what our Seabees do when they deploy forward in various places around the world,” Franco said.

The event will also feature food and craft vendors, along with music.

Franco said the event is unique because the base is usually not open to the public.

“As I meet people in the community, they often ask, what is a Seabee? What do they do?” Franco said. “So this is a great opportunity for them to see and meet Seabees that are here in homeport training, getting ready to deploy, and see some of the equipment that they use.”

Franco said the event also helps families understand the work of Seabees.

“We can’t do what we do without the community support,” Franco said. “So being able to open up the base is just a way for us to pay back.”

Visitors should enter through the Broad Avenue Gate near Memorial Hospital. Parking will be available near the displays and vendors.
