OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) — The American Cancer Society of South Mississippi is hosting a Healing Yoga fundraiser for anyone affected by cancer.
The event will take place on Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. at River Rock Yoga Studio in Ocean Springs.
Karen Hyver with the American Cancer Society said Mississippi’s cancer mortality rate is over 17% higher than the national average.
“Much of that is because of the lack of continuity and care,” Hyver said. “That is because many people just can’t keep up financially or physically with the burden of the regimen.”
Funds raised from the event will go directly toward supporting patients with resources, helping ensure they and their caregivers can receive treatment without delay or missing a treatment.

Moira Anderson, owner of River Rock Yoga Studio, said the program is accessible for everyone, including beginners and active yoga participants. The event is also open to caregivers, friends, family, and the greater community.
The session will include gentle breath work, meditation, and stretching.
“Yoga really stresses self-care and peacefulness,” Anderson said. “A way to be nurturing, to calm the mind down, as well as relax the body, and use movement to help calm the mind down.”
Pre-registration is required online. The suggested minimum donation is $30 for the 90-minute workshop.
River Rock Yoga and Pilates is located at 3670 Groveland Road in Ocean Springs.
