Ahead of the opening, Gulfport Historical Society President Betty Shaw shared a look at some artifacts from the building’s 100-year history held at the Gulfport Museum of History.
There were old luggage tags, a candlestick holder, matchboxes, paperweights, a teapot and photos of some of the staff who worked there.
“The Markham building was home of the Coast First Radio Station Broadcasting Offices, and housed the area’s first public pool. For 11 cents a boy could swim all day,” Shaw said, reading one of the postcards.

It’s called adaptive reuse. If the building is saveable, it should be saved. And even if it’s not used as a hotel, which this one is, but we’ve got a lot of buildings around here that are reused. And that’s a good thing.
