Artwork filled the Gulfport Museum of History, telling stories of the Coast through brushstrokes. The association is highlighting local artists along with some who helped start it all.

GCAA member Cindy Easterling said 100 years is a long time, and it takes a lot to keep the association going for that long, but the art is what keeps it strong.

“The Gulf Coast Art Association is... I mean, there’s a little dissension there, but one of the longest, continuously active art associations in the state of Mississippi,” Easterling said. “So that’s saying a lot, to keep a group going that long.”

Current local artists

One room of the history museum is dedicated to current local artists who take inspiration from many different facets. Scott Stuckey began painting last year.

“It’s actually amazing. I was excited to actually get an invite for this,” Stuckey said. “So, for me to start painting a little over a year ago, and have my artwork hanging in a museum, that’s kind of amazing.”

Honoring a past GCAA member

Another room is dedicated to an artist who helped GCAA from the beginning—Josephine Alfonso. Her family brought in her artwork, including family portraits, coastal pieces and her palette.

Easterling said there’s rich history behind Alfonso and her work.

“As I’ve gotten to know more about her, she was very prolific and in a wide range of subject matter,” Easterling said. “I mean, she could do portraits, she could do landscapes, she could do architecture, still life, plants. And so we’d like to honor her and her family for bringing the paintings into it.”
