BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — Coastal Rug Studio may be new in Biloxi, but the man behind the business is no stranger to the art of rug making.
Owner Greylen Malboeuf described rug-making as a careful process.
“It is like a barber, they take a trimmer, and they trim it all down to make it all even,” Malboeuf said.

Malboeuf said there are many steps involved in rug-making, including tufting, which is when yarn is pushed through a fabric to create a looped surface.
Malboeuf said learning proper technique is the secret to success in the craft of any design.

“Wherever we want to start, we insert the tufting gun into the cloth. We want to make sure the prongs are always touching the cloth, and on top of that, we want to create a dimple effect, and the way we do that is to lock our shoulder and lock our elbow, and we lean our body weight into it,” Malboeuf said.

After taking a rug-making class in Alabama, Malboeuf said he realized he could maximize his experience with the proper tools. He went out and bought canvases, yarn, and a tufting gun.
“The biggest thing is cost. I started this endeavor not wanting to take any loans out whatsoever, so everything is out of my pockets,” Malboeuf said.
While Malboeuf has mastered his skills as a rug maker, his business is equipped to teach others the ropes.

“It’s therapeutic,” Malboeuf said. “I enjoy seeing people get excited, and I get excited.”
