BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — The Biloxi National Cemetery is calling for volunteers to help place flags on graves ahead of Memorial Day.

The flag placement event will take place on Saturday, May 23, at 9 a.m. at the cemetery, located at 400 Veterans Avenue. Volunteers will place 27,642 flags on graves.

The event pays tribute to veterans and their service.

“A thank you for what the veteran has done for the United States of America,” organizer James Corley said.

The day will begin with a short instructional period. Families with loved ones buried at the cemetery will place flags first, followed by other volunteers.

“Usually, we have hundreds of volunteers that do come out, and we appreciate every one of them,” Corley said.

The event typically takes less than an hour to complete.

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held on Monday. Volunteers will also be needed on Saturday, May 30, to help collect the flags for storage.
