D’IBERVILLE, Miss. (WLOX) — The D’Iberville Fishing Rodeo began Friday morning, marking the first fishing rodeo in the city since the 1980s.
Fishermen headed out early Friday morning, launching their boats from the D’Iberville Marina.
The three-day event features more than 700 anglers competing for cash payouts and prizes across 15 species in three categories.
Over the weekend, people can also come out and enjoy food trucks, live entertainment, vendors, and fish.
Officials said the three-day event goes beyond competition, serving as a community celebration that honors the city’s rich fishing and shrimping heritage.

“All of our communities were basically built on fishing, shrimping, oystering, different things like that,” said City Manager Bobby Weaver. “It’s just an opportunity to bring it back, and what better way to do it than to have a festival atmosphere where you can have a whole bunch of people come out and enjoy themselves for the next three days.”
Saturday’s schedule also features a kids’ fishing tournament from 8 to 11 a.m.
“One of the things we are doing on Sunday is we are going to call it America’s Day. We have America’s 250th birthday coming up, so we decided to incorporate that on Sunday,” said Weaver.
City officials hope to make the fishing rodeo an annual event.
