NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Military ships arrived in New Orleans as the city welcomed thousands of crew members and visitors for the Sail 250 celebration of America’s birthday.
City leaders joined flag officers from the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard to welcome service members on the riverfront. The ships are part of the largest flotilla to ever sail the Mississippi River.
Mardi Gras krewes came out for the welcome party, giving sailors a taste of New Orleans.
“We in fact celebrated our 300th birthday, just a couple of years ago and being about to kick off 250th birthday of our nation here along the Mississippi River, it’s exciting, its fitting, its a great thing for our community,” said Walt Leger, CEO of New Orleans and Company.
Mayor Helena Moreno said the ships represent enduring partnerships.

Daily ship tours kick off Thursday morning. The event runs through Monday, featuring a seafood cookoff, fireworks and a blessing of the fleet when the ships head to the next city on Monday (May 31).
New Orleans is one of five stops.
