BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — Shrek the Musical is gearing up for opening night at the Beau Rivage Casino and Resort. The curtains rise June 11 at 7 p.m.

Shrek the Musical producer and director Jeb Rand says the cast and crew have been in pre-production for a year with the Beau Rivage.

The 2001 movie Shrek features flying dragons, an ogre and a talking donkey. Rand says bringing those fictional characters on stage was one of the biggest hurdles with production.

“It’s a challenge for movie magic, you know, they can hide the wires and all that stuff, but, you know, newsflash, it’s a little secret,” says Rand. “Like, ogres and flying dragons don’t really exist, but they will hear at the Beau Rivage live on stage.”

By opening night, the cast and crew will have been rehearsing the production for three consecutive weeks.

Rand says the show is a way for families to “escape” real life and be transported to the iconic swamp, but it’s not just kids who will get a kick out of the production.

Shrek was always written by Mike Myers to be a double entendre,” says Rand. “So, the adults are laughing for a different reason. Kids are, you know, chuckling. So, just a lot of fun.”

Shrek the Musical will dazzle the audience for two hours each show, but Rand says a lot of the magic happens prior to the curtains rising.

“The guy who plays Shrek, it takes him an hour and a half every day just to get into makeup,” says Rand. “And honestly, about 45 minutes to get out of makeup. So, what happens before the show and after the show is equally as impressive as what happens on stage.”
