LUMBERTON — The Lumberton Main Street Association is beginning a new Summer Blockbuster Series on Saturday, June 6, providing an opportunity for family-friendly activities and free meals throughout the summer.
The first movie of the series is “Superman” and will be shown across from Lumberton Church in the space next to Mejias. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the movie will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
John Maroney, executive director of the Lumberton Main Street Association, said the city has held spring and Christmas movie events before but felt summertime works best because people have more time and youths are out of school.
“Many kids sometimes don’t have a meal, or there’s just not a lot to do once they’re out of school,” Maroney said. “So, we figured if we did all the movies in the summertime, it would at least give the kids something to do every month or every three weeks.”
Maroney is a member of Lumberton Church and said he pitched the free concessions idea before he started working with LMSA.
“I think at that original point, it might’ve been like $2 for a hot dog, $1 for popcorn, and most people would just pay that, but there would always be those couple kids that didn’t have that $2,” Maroney said.
The showing will come with free concessions, including hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn and more, for adults and children, provided by Lumberton Church and ArchAngel Ministries.
While the exact dates have yet to be announced, the association will have hosted three movies by the end of the blockbuster series, with two other showings in July.
