POPLARVILLE, Miss. (WLOX) — The 43rd annual Blueberry Jubilee takes place this weekend with entertainment, vendors, and fresh blueberries.

“It’s just a big party for Poplarville,” said Shirley Wiltshire from the Blueberry Jubilee Council.

The festival runs Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13.

The event will feature arts and crafts, storytelling, food, live performances, an annual 5K, a 1-mile fun run, and a car show.

“We have over 220 vendors, from blueberry products all the way to arts and crafts, and our food vendors,” Wiltshire said.

This year’s celebration also includes a theme honoring America’s 250th anniversary.

“Our blueberry t-shirt for this year represents what we’re doing here in America. Our celebration of the 250th in America,” Wiltshire said.

Friday night activities begin at 6 p.m. with storytelling and live music.

“I think Friday night is my favorite part because that’s the calm before the storm. Everything is done. We have local entertainment,” Wiltshire said.

Local restaurants are offering blueberry specials on Saturday. Other retailers are holding blueberry sales throughout the week and on Saturday.

“Everybody cleans up. They decorate with the Blueberry Jubilee emblems or blueberries,” Wiltshire said.

Miss Blueberry Ava Kelley said the festival gives the small town something to celebrate.

“Being from a small town, not a lot happens all the time,” Kelley said. “It’s fun to have something to do. Especially when so many people come, you can meet new people and try new things.”

The festival is centered around the Town Green, located at 511 South Main Street.

The official state fruit of Mississippi is the blueberry.
