BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — On June 19, WLOX News anchor Makenzie Martin will be joining the cast of “Shrek: The Musical” as Red Riding Hood for one night only at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino.

She joined the cast for rehearsal, learning the “Story of My Life” number ahead of the show.

“It’s such a fun show. We have all of the fairy-tale creatures that you know and love from the movie. It just brought to life on this huge stage,” Kelly Beck, assistant choreographer for “Shrek: The Musical,” said.

It’s those fairy tale creatures that producer and director of “Shrek: The Musical” Jeb Rand said are the perfect escapism.

“Where can you go nowadays for two hours with your family? I mean, if kids five years old or 105 years old, it’s something for everyone to enjoy,” says Rand. “I mean, it’s just mindless, fun entertainment.”

A major component of bringing the story to life is the wardrobe and costuming. Barbara Tacconi, the wardrobe manager of the production, said it’s always busy in the wardrobe room.

“A lot of work on costumes that’s been really hard to work on this year, but it’s been amazing,” Tacconi said. “We love it. We do a lot of repairs, zipper replacements, and we make sure the cast is comfortable and no mishaps on stage once they get out there.”

The character Shrek is known for his green skin. To make that happen, wig and makeup designer Amanda Bravender said it takes 45 minutes to turn the cast member green, bringing Shrek to life.

“So, we do Shrek’s makeup first, then Donkey, and then Fiona,” said Bravender. “Then, I see some time to help the cast get their glue, their prosthetics, make sure their makeup looks great, and their wigs are perfect.”
