MOSS POINT, Miss. (WLOX) — Iced and hot lattes are among the staple drinks prepared at Sugar Beans Cafe in downtown Moss Point.

Lakelia Jones and her husband Kenneth opened the cafe after years of building their business from a festival tent to a food truck.
“My husband and I are serial entrepreneurs, and we knew we wanted to do something different than the jobs we were currently working at the time, and food has always been a passion for us,” Jones said.
The couple started in March 2019, traveling and setting up at local festivals with a single product.
“We started in 2019 with a lemonade recipe and a 10x10 tent, and we were selling lemonade for five dollars at the time. The line was wrapped around a couple of times and we realized we may have something special here,” Jones said.

Over time, they expanded the menu to include coffee and homemade cakes, inspiring the name Sugar Beans.
Kenneth Jones then built the couple’s first food truck from an enclosed cargo trailer.
“We went to a lot, picked out an enclosed cargo trailer that had raw walls. The windows, the plumbing, the electrical, all of the flooring, the sinks, he did all that,” Jones said.
The food truck launched in September 2021, but the couple still dreamed of opening a permanent location.
“We’ve always wanted our own spot. When visiting other restaurants, we would say if we had a building, I would do this.”

That opportunity came after they spotted a for-rent sign while driving through downtown.
“I called, and here we are,” Jones said.

The cafe now features a front area for drinks and a kitchen equipped with a stove, charbroiler, and griddle.
Jones said the business also carries personal meaning. Born and raised in Moss Point, she said her grandmother worked in cafes on Main Street before passing away last year.
“So now here I am continuing the legacy of not only working in the cafe but owning the cafe on the same street my grandmother worked in,” Jones said.
Sugar Beans Cafe is located at 5005 Main Street in Moss Point.
