JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The countdown is on for America’s big 250th birthday.
Hundreds of Mississippians came out to the Mississippi Coliseum to celebrate with a concert featuring musicians from across the Magnolia State.
Gov. Tate Reeves was in attendance and spoke at the concert.
“We’re going to celebrate America’s birthday Mississippi-style tonight. We are the birthplace of America’s music,” Gov. Reeves said. “So what better way to celebrate America’s 250th birthday than by being united in song?”
Patriotic Mississippians packed the coliseum Saturday night to hear an orchestra, choir and cover band — all performers who call Mississippi home.

Mississippi First Lady Elee Reeves helped organize the event.
She and Gov. Reeves said the goal was simple — bring the state together.
“We have so much to be thankful for here in Mississippi, so much to be thankful for in the United States of America, and so I am very hopeful that we will continue to see unity around celebrating this birthday and recognize that we can disagree without being disagreeable, but more importantly, let’s focus on the good things that are happening in our country and the great things that are happening in the state of Mississippi,” Gov. Reeves continued.
Hundreds showed up dressed in red, white and blue — showing their American spirit.
Beth Vanhorn came out to watch her stepdaughter perform in the orchestra. With the nation’s 250th birthday just two weeks away, she said the excitement is building.

“I think everybody is really getting into it, realizing that it is 250 years that we have been in America and that we came from different areas of the world to plant ourselves in America. And I’m proud to be an American,” Vanhorn shared.
