WIGGINS, Miss. (WLOX) — Shelby Dedeaux of Wiggins is heading to the next round of a national singing competition after winning WLOX and Gray Media’s Star-Spangled Sing-Off contest.
Dedeaux earned the top spot after viewers voted for their favorite performance from contestants who submitted a cappella videos of themselves singing the National Anthem through the contest website.
“It was amazing,” Dedeaux said. “I couldn’t believe it, honestly. There were a lot of great singers on there.”
Now in the regional voting round, she is competing for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Nashville, Tennessee, where she would record a performance set to air on WLOX and Gray Media stations across the country.
The contest is connected to America’s 250th birthday.

“I’ve always loved singing, but I also have a brother that’s in the Army, so this song really hits close to home for me,” Dedeaux said.
Dedeaux said she has never competed seriously before, noting that her singing experience comes from school choir and singing at home.
She said her mother-in-law encouraged her to enter the contest.
“She kind of talked me into it and saying I could do it,” Dedeaux said. “So we tried it, and here we are. It’s amazing.”
Dedeaux said singing in front of a larger audience is different from what she is used to, but she hopes Stone County will support her as she tries to move forward.

“Stone County rallies behind each other, and I’m hoping they’ll rally again and get me to Nashville,” she said.
Voting is open now through Sunday, June 28. The final winner will be announced on July 2.
