WASHINGTON (WLOX) — A large exhibition on the National Mall is underway, featuring booths dedicated to states, territories, and federal agencies as part of America’s 250th birthday celebration.
The Great American State Fair features rides, fair food, and a rodeo, but the pavilions lining the lawn serve as the main attraction.
Mississippi’s pavilion showcases the state’s impact on the nation across multiple fields.
“We’re sharing all of the contributions Mississippi has made to the nation and the world over the last 250 years. From healthcare, technology, aerospace, and, of course, our arts, literature, and music,” said Paige Robertson of Visit Mississippi.
The museum-style interactive exhibit also highlights Mississippi’s history and many of its most recognizable figures, with a focus on the state’s musical legacy.

“We are America’s birthplace of music,” said Robertson. “So when you come in here, you’re going to learn a little bit about the roots of rock ‘n’ roll. The king of rock ‘n’ roll, Elvis Presley, the king of blues, B.B. King, and the father of country music, Jimmie Rodgers.”

Visitors can also explore works by authors William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams, view sculptures created by Mississippi artists, and see College World Series trophies from Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
“It wouldn’t be Mississippi without baseball,” Robertson said.
Robertson said the pavilion encourages visitors to engage with the exhibits.
“You can lift things up, touch buttons, make things light up, and watch a movie,” said Robertson. “We have every part of our culture and art history represented here in our booth.”

Robertson said the pavilion has received positive feedback, with many visitors saying they plan to visit the Magnolia State.
“I’m so proud to show off our state. We have so much to offer the world and have so much to share about ourselves,” Robertson said.
The Great American State Fair on the National Mall runs through July 10.
