Grammy Award-Winning Singer and Actress Brandy Norwood: From Mississippi roots to music, faith, family, and what’s next

Grammy Award-Winning Singer and Actress Brandy Norwood: From Mississippi roots to music, faith, family, and what’s next

MCCOMB, Miss. (WLBT) - After McComb rolled out the red carpet to celebrate Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Brandy Norwood this week, the hometown native spoke one-on-one with Patrice Clark about faith, family, and the Mississippi roots that still guide her — plus what’s next in music.

For Brandy Norwood, returning to McComb was about more than a visit — it was a chance to reconnect with the place where her story began.

The Grammy Award-winning entertainer came back to the Mississippi city where she was born, welcomed by a community proud to celebrate one of its own.

After the big celebration, Brandy was ready to talk about music — and how meaningful it was to reconnect with the place where her story began.

“I haven’t been home in such a long time. I just wanted to come back. Being honored is a beautiful feeling, but I wanted to come back and see my family. And when I come back, it’s like an extended family — with all these beautiful people here celebrating. It just feels amazing,” Brandy said.

Brandy burst onto the music scene as a teenager with her self-titled debut album in 1994. The album featured breakout hits like “I Wanna Be Down,” “Baby,” and “Best Friend,” helping establish her as one of R&B’s biggest stars.

She followed that up with her second album, Never Say Never. It included the chart-topping song “The Boy Is Mine” with Monica, which became a No. 1 hit and earned Brandy her first Grammy.

Since then, she has sold millions of records and built a lasting career in music, television and film.

Q: What advice do you have for people growing up in small towns like McComb? And you’re known as a “vocal Bible” — what would you say to people who want to get into the entertainment industry?

Brandy: “I would say to young people: understand that your dreams are true and they’re real. All you have to do is believe in your dreams. Belief can take you places you really deserve to go. It takes belief, courage and dedication.”

Decades later, Brandy is still recognized as one of the most influential voices in contemporary R&B. Her impact was further celebrated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honoring her contributions to the entertainment industry.

“I went to school in Hollywood, and all I’d see were those stars on the Walk of Fame. It represents endurance and success — and dedication. To be able to remember where I came from, and to be on that stage when I gave my speech, meant everything to me and it meant everything to my family, because it proves I will never forget where I come from,” she said.

She has also expanded her career as a best-selling author, sharing her story and inspiring fans beyond music.

“I’m very blessed that Phases is a bestseller. I honestly want people to find themselves in my story and find their own courage — so they can overcome the things in their life like I had to in my life,” Brandy said.

As Brandy turns the page to a new chapter, the honors just keep coming. She’s fresh off a successful tour, a performance at the Essence Festival, and being recognized there, too. But she says the biggest honor is seeing her hometown of McComb celebrate her.

Brandy gave back in a big way — pledging $100,000 for band instruments at Higgins Middle School in McComb. She also donated signed albums, books, wardrobe pieces from her hit TV show and other memorabilia to help launch the McComb Museum of Music, expected to open in 2027. Brandy says the best is yet to come.

“I want to do a lot more touring and a lot more entertaining — touching people and blessing people. That’s why I’m here. I have nothing else to do but do that: bless people, help people and inspire people. The sky is the limit for me,” she said.

Q: What would you say to the people who love you — who have supported you since you were six or seven years old?

“I just want to say to all of you who poured into me, prayed for me and loved me: I so appreciate it, because your prayers are working — and they’ve been answered. I’m a testimony to answered prayer, for sure,” Brandy said.
