OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) — Once a month, the Juke Joint’s backyard in Ocean Springs fills with local artists, musicians and shoppers for Madhouse Market.
Madison Scott started Madhouse Market about a year ago as a vintage event. Scott said it has since grown to include handmade goods, tea makers and live music.
“We really just want it to be a home for the local artists who have more of the oddities and those kinds of things to have a place to come together as a community and show their stuff,” Scott said.
“The music part is what I think like ties it all together,” Scott said.
Vendors see new business
For vendors like Amanda Schuler, the market offers a chance to put her products directly into new hands.

“It will get my product into so many people’s hands that normally wouldn’t because I do not have a physical store. So, yes, more business,” Schuler said.
Schuler founded 3 Daughter’s Apothecary. She is an herbalist who sells natural products, including tea blends.
“I love to blend teas, unique teas. Today’s, my secret ingredient was tarragon. So it’s just really unique and different,” Schuler said.
Live music part of the draw
This was the third time River Schmidt and the Flood played at the market.
“Yeah, it kind of came together by accident. And I think for a long time we were like, oh, God, this is never going to work. And now here we are,” said River Schmidt, the band’s songwriter and guitarist.

Schmidt said the Madhouse crowd is part of the experience.
“Everyone here is incredibly supportive. Like, I mean, it’s really amazing how, I mean, you can tell, like, just looking around, like, people are actually listening and, like, having fun,” Schmidt said.
Bigger crowds expected
Cruisin’ the Coast brings thousands of visitors to South Mississippi in October. Scott hopes visitors discover the local vendors at Madhouse Market too.
“It’s going to be cool to see, like, those generations all come together and hang out. So I’m excited for that,” Scott said.
Scott said the biggest part of Madhouse Market is the community.
“We come as strangers and we leave as family. And I love that about this place,” Scott said.
The next Madhouse Market runs Sept. 12 at the Juke Joint from 8 p.m. to midnight. The event is for people 21 and older.
Scott said she is holding another market for the Juke Joint’s Frets for Pets benefit, which runs Sept. 25-27.
