BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — The Biloxi Beautification Commission is reviving the “Paint-a-Can” contest at this weekend’s Biloxi Seafood Festival.
The contest will take place at the Great Lawn at Harrah’s in Biloxi on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Keep Biloxi Beautiful representative Rocquel Ransonet Hays said the commission decided to bring the contest back to coincide with Cruisin’ the Coast.
“We just decided to bring it back, and it was a great time of the year to kind of get these cans painted and have them on the beach for Cruisin’ the Coast,” Hays said.
The cans used in the contest are official county trash cans donated by Harrison County Sand Beach.

“They’ve donated the cans, and they’re going to be primed and ready to go. So you just bring your paint and your brushes and make it your own coastal charm,” Hays said.
She added that under the coastal charm theme, past designs have included sunsets, sea life, magnolias and oak trees.
“It can be anything. Sky’s the limit,” Hays said.
The contest includes a People’s Choice category, along with a first-place award for both the adult and youth divisions. Hays said judges will base their decisions on creativity and how well entries stick to the coastal charm theme.
More than $500 in prizes, donated by local businesses, will be awarded.

Registration, which is available online, closes Thursday at 5 p.m. Hays said walk-up participants will also be accommodated if possible.
After the contest, crews will collect the cans and place them across the beach, where they will remain for a year until the contest is held again.
