MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis, along with the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, unveiled a new statue honoring Jimmy Buffett.
The 7 1/2-foot bronze statue, created by sculptor Ben Victor, shows the singer-songwriter playing guitar and looking out over the water that inspired his early life and career.
Exhibit opens this weekend
The unveiling coincides with the opening weekend of the “Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience,” a permanent 6,000-square-foot exhibit at the maritime museum.
Buffett spent his early years in Mobile. Although he sang and wrote about communities along the Gulf Coast, Mobile was a place he always called home.
Sculptor reflects on statue
Ben Victor, the artist behind the statue, said the opportunity was meaningful to him.

“Man, it’s amazing. I just couldn’t have imagined. It’s just so much fun. And it’s one of those sculptures that’s really near and dear to my heart. And so it’s just been a great time memorializing him, but also helping his legacy live on,” Victor said.
The city says this month’s events are about honoring Buffett’s lasting impact on the Gulf Coast and the world of music.
