GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) — If you have some old games, game systems or even old toys and DVDs, you can bring them to Game X Change in Gulfport for some extra cash.
For some, older game systems are a thing of the past, but at Game X Change, those very systems and consoles are what set the store apart.
“With our old school, it’s not as common as PS4 would come in, but when these do come in the store, everyone gets excited,” said District Manager Christopher Lankford.
Game X Change first opened in 1992 in Arkansas. Now, more than 30 years later, both Lankford and Gulfport store manager Sherrie Angueira say the company has grown, now housing at least 100 stores between two owners across 10 states.
“We have a lot of the second-generation stuff like the Xbox Ones, PlayStation 3s and 4s, but we’re getting a lot of the older systems now, too,” Angueira said. “I don’t know if maybe some of the elderly people are cleaning out their homes or maybe they’ve gone away to college and so they’re getting in there and cleaning out the closet, but we’re getting a lot more Ataris. We’re getting some Sega Genesis, some of the PlayStation 1s and 2s, handheld consoles, Game Boy Advances — those are so fun — and the Game Boy Colors.”

Angueira says that while Game X Change is a franchise, each store depends solely on the community.
“We can’t sell something if they don’t bring it in,” Angueira said. “We don’t order new consoles or new games. We order some new accessories, such as controllers and headsets and some cables to be sure that we have them for all the systems we have in the store. But, if we don’t get the community to bring it in and sell it to us, then we don’t have anything to put on our shelves. All the collectible memorabilia... that’s all been brought to us by our customers.”
While Game X Change buys, sells and trades gaming consoles, other items accepted range from digital devices to collectible figurines, movies and even instruments.
“We also take in musical equipment such as guitars, keyboards... We’ve taken in drum kits,” Lankford said. “We have a full variety of amps on this aisle here. We also take in vinyls, as well, if anyone wants to get back into that.”
Walking the aisles, Angueira says it feels like a step back into her childhood — something she says many parents from her generation are searching for, in order to give their children a glimpse of what their parents’ childhood was like.
