GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) — Located inside a huge movie prop warehouse, one fright-filled attraction on the Coast brings scares and the opportunity to see items and sets from big-name Hollywood movies.

Terror on the Coast co-founder Kevin Mitchell said he never expected to get into the haunted house business.

“If you would have asked me 15 years ago if I was going to own a haunted house, I would have said never. I don’t know anything about them,” Mitchell said.

Visitors travel from outside Mississippi for the attraction. Hunter Jackson said he and his group made the trip from out of state.

“We’re from Billings, Montana, and we just came here to have some fun,” Jackson said.

Some visitors said they came in expecting a scare. Ava Brightbill said she wanted the haunted house to deliver.

“I expect to feel scared out of my britches, beyond belief,” Brightbill said.

Audra Feldner said the attraction had already gotten to her before going in.

“It does scare me a little bit,” Feldner said, standing in the lobby of the attraction.

Mitchell said the location surprises first-time visitors driving through the area to find it. He said that reaction changes once people step inside.

“People drive down the street in the dilapidated area. They call me and say, hey, am I in the right place?” Mitchell said. “And when they walk in, they’re all like, wow. I had no idea this was right here in Gulfport.”

Haunted house sits inside 88,000-square-foot prop warehouse

“Well, so we’re in 88,000-square-foot, and the whole 88,000 square feet houses props, even in our haunted house. We call it our junk drawer. When you come in this warehouse, you’re going to see stuff from, oh man, going way back to Planet of the Apes, GI Joe, American Horror Story, a couple of Mark Wahlberg movies. So the company that we own is Sideshow Props of Louisiana, which my partner owns that,” Mitchell said.

Terror on the Coast co-founder Lawrence Barattini said the props come from his work in the film industry.

“So I have a prop house in New Orleans for the last 25 years. This is all leftover props that I work on movies. I salvage them from being destroyed, bring them here, and I create them,” Barattini said.

Mitchell said the business supports a large volume of film production.

“Sideshow Props 2.0 of Mississippi here. We work on over 100 films a year. We’re the only prop company, really in the state of Mississippi that’s a full-blown prop company,” Mitchell said.

Barattini said the inventory is meant to support Mississippi’s film industry.

“So we have everything they need here, just as if they were in Hollywood. We have everything they need here for Mississippi film to escalate,” Barattini said.

Mitchell said the idea for the haunted house came at the end of 2014 while working on multiple film projects.

“It’s kind of like having a Home Depot here. Everything we have housed, it’s sitting there ready. So when we’re building a room and we go shopping, you know, we let our props decide what the room’s going to be. We’re kind of shooting from our hip, but that’s the fun part about it. You know, we never know what we’re creating until it’s created,” Mitchell said.
