WIGGINS, Miss. (WLOX) — People of all ages wore Halloween costumes and collected candy Thursday afternoon at the annual Merchants Trick-or-Treating event in downtown Wiggins, ahead of Oct. 31.
Business owners sat outside their shops and handed out candy one by one.
Business owner describes event
Bridget Morgan, a barber at Brick Street Social Barbershop and Clothier, said the event fills a gap in community events ahead of the holiday months.
“We have the Pine Hill Social in the summer and spring. And so, it kind of dies down in the fall,” Morgan said. “They’ll wrap from 1st all the way down to the end of Blaylock. And they just fill. It’s a fun community event. And they know they’re safe. We’re all having a good time. And the costumes are fun every year. So, it’s new stuff every time.”
Event becomes family tradition
Merchants Trick-or-Treating has become an annual tradition over the years.

Layla Essary, executive director of the Stone County Economic Development Partnership, said businesses look forward to the event every year. Some have personal ties to it.
Essary said she spoke with a longtime business owner whose daughter was in a baby stroller at the event 16 years ago.
“Which tells you at least 16 years,” Essary said. “So, it’s something that’s really got a long-standing tradition here in Wiggins.”
Night out against crime follows
After the Merchants Trick-or-Treating, the Wiggins Police Department and the Stone County Sheriff’s Department held a night out against crime. The event allows the community to meet the law enforcement officers who help keep the area safe.
The winners of the Wiggins Scarecrow contest were also announced.
