Coast families wrapping up summer fun at TrainTastic

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Wheels are turning and on track at TrainTastic, something parents have been aiming for from an intellectual standup during the summer.
“We’re from Ohio so we get like two and a half months off in the summer and it’s just super important to make sure we’re staying active,” Kelly Whiteamire said. “I’m a teacher, I teach middle school so I definitely understand how important it is that you don’t stop learning but you can do it in a fun way.”
From STEAM activities to exploring trains through and through, the museum offers learning opportunities for all.
“We have a bunch of interactive exhibits so come see all the trains, legos, and all the layouts. But also spend some time in our interactive exhibits. We want all students to be able to experience the magic of TrainTastic whether they are home school, public school, or private school,” Traintastic Director of Marketing Wendy Rippee said.
Parents like Kelly Whiteamire and Caroline Hebert agree that the museum has served not only as an educational stop but also as an escape from typical South Mississippi weather.
“We did a lot of water activities since it’s so hot and enjoying air-conditioned museums like this one because the heat is too much this summer,” Hebert said.
And out of all the exhibits, the kids weren’t shy about sharing what they enjoyed most.
“My favorite about the train station is the lighthouse.”
“The train over there.”
“And maybe that train-like thing.”
With school ramping back up, TrainTastic offers field trips all throughout the year and even encourages homeschool groups to come out. Every Wednesday, home-school families are welcome at a discounted rate.
